Reconditioned Radiators, saving or cost ?

Many people recommend having a radiator reconditioned instead of replacing it. It is said that the benefits of reconditioning is primarily the low cost of doing so.

Things to consider in reconditioning your radiator may include:

  1. Testing the radiator and determine whether it has any leaks – if it does these need to be fixed;
  2. Cleaning out the radiator, and stripping down the parts;
  3. Resoldering the radiator tank and the filler neck;
  4. Straightening the fins on the radiator.

While the costs of reconditioning are low, the disadvantages are that reconditioned radiators have a short life span, and installation and removal of the radiator adds cost.

Porsche Radiators

For many Porsche purists, the 996 model 911 Porsche was a departure from the 911 pedigree of air cooled radiators.

In 1998 when Porsche introduced the 996 model 911, it switched from air cooled radiators to water cooled radiators, with a view to complying with European environmental regulations and the desire to refine the 911.

This departure from air cooled radiators (which had been present in Porsche models since the 356, 1948 model) in the 993, to the water cooled radiator of the 996 was a signified generational change by Porsche.

What is a radiator ?

A radiators is a heat exchanger, which transfers thermal energy from one place to another, for the purpose of heating or cooling. Most radiators are constructed of aluminium and are fitted to cars to cool the engine. The radiator is a source of heat to its environment / location, although this may be for the purpose of heating this environment / location, or for cooling the fluid or coolant supplied to it, as for engine cooling.
